CHENNAI: Traffic police has barred its personnel in the city from using
mobile phones while on duty. The order comes after many were found talking over phones while manning signals and during vehicle checks.

The order, issued by additional commissioner R Sudhakar, says personnel using mobile phones while regulating traffic may lose concentration, leading to delays. It points out that personnel, whose duty changes every four hours, can instead focus on manning important junctions, enforcing the prescribed rules strictly and ensuring that those violating them are brought to book.
While official communication during duty hours can be made on the walkie-talkies allotted to the personnel, senior officers have been asked to issue the required instructions to the police personnel including women while deploying them for VIP security, bandobast duty as well as for important events.
Since traffic regulation and enforcement of rules are important, requiring continuous monitoring for identifying the violators and for preventing accidents, the use of mobile phones will only be a hindrance, said an officer.
However, said Sudhakar, in case of an emergency, the personnel concerned can hand over duty to their colleagues at the spot and get the messages conveyed.
A senior officer explaining why it had become necessary to impose the restriction, said personnel on the ground often catch people talking on cellphones while driving and advise them against doing so, but they forget that the same principle applies to them too.
Last year, police commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore had issued a similar order. There are nearly 4,000 traffic police personnel across the city, with officers of the rank of sub inspector and above eligible to register cases against traffic violators. Currently, traffic police personnel are allowed to use mobile phones to click pictures of the violators and fine them.
