CHENNAI: A 23-year-old stalker slashed a 17-year-old girl in the neck with a broken liquor bottle near the Ambattur railway station on Friday morning after she ignored his advances. The girl has been hospitalised. Police said her condition is stable. Police identified the stalker as Ayyappan of Karuveppillaipalayam in Villupuram district, an employee of a private canteen on ECR.

Police said a few months back, the girl had by mistake called up Ayyappan while dialling her friend's number.

Since then he kept calling her up. Later, he befriended her through a social networking app and used to chat with her. Two months ago he proposed to her.

When she turned him down, Ayyappan kept calling pressing her to marry him. Police said the girl then stopped talking to the man. On Friday morning when she got down at Ambattur on way to college, Ayyappan confronted her on the road. He threatened to kill himself if she didn't marry him. The girl turned him down and went on her way. Ayyappan then grabbed an empty liquor bottle lying by the roadside, broke it and stabbed the girl in the neck.

Passersby caught hold of Ayyappan when he tried to flee. They took the girl to a nearby private hospital and informed the Ambattur police. Ayyappan was booked for stalking, criminal intimidation, attempt to murder and under the Pocso Act. He was remanded in judicial custody.
