B Kannan, secretary of the T Nagar Residents Welfare Association, said the walls on the right and rear side of the building began collapsing around 3.30am. "Now, the building is standing as a skeleton. The burnt parts of the side wall fell over a restaurant on the right side and parking, behind the structure," he said.

The building allegedly lacked some

fire

safety measures, which was exposed during an audit by the department of fire in 2015. Moreover, there was a building permission violation too. The developer had obtained permission from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) for constructing only four floors. However, four more floors were built.

Urban development minister Udumalai Radhakrishnan told TOI on Thursday morning that a decision on demolishing the remaining structure would be taken at a meeting he will have with CMDA officials around 9.30am.
