CHENNAI: After days of on and off patchy rainfall, Chennai has been receiving widespread thundershowers since the early hours of Wednesday due to easterly waves.


The IMD has forecast light rain or thundershowers in the next 48 hours in the city and the weather will remain mainly cloudy.

Several localities in the southern suburbs of the state capital recorded sharp long spells of rain while short intense rainfall continued in city.

Sathyabamba University (near Shollinganallur) registered maximum rainfall at 60mm while Shollinganallur witnessed 55mm rain.

Tambaram recorded 44mm, Taramani 35mm, Poonamalle 34mm, Meenambakkam 21mm, Alandur 19mm, Aynavaram - 19mm, Redhills 14mm, Perambur 14mm, Ennore 13mm, Madhavaram 11mm, Puzhal 10mm, Ambattur 10mm, KK Nagar 10mm, Guindy 10mm and Nungambakkam recorded 10mm.

"Tuesday’s trough in easterlies from Equatorial Indian Ocean off south Sri Lanka coast to southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu coast is now being seen as a cyclonic circulation over Comorin area and the neighbourhood at 0.9km above the mean sea level," the IMD said.

Weather blogger Pradeep John, in his online post, said, "What is expected from easterly wave has happened. Some good rainfall reported in south Chennai region particularly around the OMR region."
