As one of his wives is a contract sanitation worker at the university, he knew the campus well and entered it at will.

Meanwhile, on the controversy over leak of the FIR copy in the case, Chennai police commissioner A Arun said FIRs for crimes of such nature are typically blocked in Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System(CCTNS), but this FIR was somehow not blocked.

"Whoever possesses the FIR of the college student or circulates it to other groups of people will be tracked, and legal action initiated for revealing the identity of the victim," Arun said.

Police action swift; we will not spare suspects, says commissioner
The city police acted swiftly and arrested the suspect in the Anna University campus rape case within a day of the complaint being registered, said city commissioner of police A Arun. He added, "we are least bothered if the suspect is affiliated to any political party, if at all."

Asked about the leak of the FIR copy containing details of the survivor's identity, the commissioner said there are only two ways an FIR could be accessed. One, police give a copy of the FIR to the complainant, and two, the FIR uploaded on the Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System (CCTNS) was accessed.

FIRs for crimes of this nature are usually blocked on CCTNS, but somehow, this FIR was not blocked, said the commissioner, adding that they are investigating the failure to block the FIR.

Police also registered a separate case to track the source of the FIR leaked on social media.

The CoP also clarified that the FIR contains only the details of the complainant's version. Later in the evening, cybercrime officials blocked the Kotturpuram FIR from the CCTNS portal.

Police said Anna University has now been brought under A-category patrol protocol and that police personnel would now conduct patrol on university premises too.

Kotturpuram police added four more sections to the FIR registered against the suspect Gnanasekaran, 37.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
