CHENNAI: Chennai and its suburbs received widespread intermittent moderate-intensity rain on Wednesday as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area and started moving towards the Tamil Nadu coast.
Nungambakkam, which recorded 4cm of rainfall till 7.30pm on Wednesday, has crossed 100cm of rainfall since Oct 1. Meenambakkam, with 3cm, touched 99cm during the same period.
From Thursday, the city’s rain chances may reduce as the weather system may move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, leading to a drop in the rainfall intensity in the city and the suburbs. However, the city may experience cool days as the system’s movement towards Andhra Pradesh could bring some cold winds from the north.
“On Thursday, the system may move towards Andhra Pradesh, which may disrupt easterlies. Rainfall may gradually reduce from Thursday. But for the subsequent two or three days, day temperatures may drop as the system will push cold winds from the north when it moves towards Andhra Pradesh,” said N Senthamarai Kannan, director, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, IMD.
On Thursday, the city and the suburbs may receive moderate-intensity rainfall. The sky may be partly cloudy. Temperatures may be a maximum of 27 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23-24 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in a few places on Dec 19. From Dec 20 to 24, light to moderate rainfall is likely at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area.
Cloudy weather, which continued from Tuesday, followed intermittent sharp spells and strong winds on Wednesday afternoon. Rainfall stopped by evening, leaving 4cm in Ennore Port, 3cm in YMCA Nandanam, 3cm in Anna University, 3cm in Taramani and 2cm in NIOT Pallikaranai.
“From tomorrow (Thursday) morning/noon, the rainfall will taper off as the low moves up from the Tamil Nadu coast. No chance for any big rainfall from this low pressure,” said blogger Pradeep John in an online post.
