Chennai Railway Division begins crackdown on people crossing closed level crossings

CHENNAI: As part of measures to improve safety, Southern Railway's Chennai division has started a crackdown on people trying to cross closed

level crossings

and those who hop across tracks instead of using foot overbridge or subway.

The move comes after a motorist fled leaving behind his two-wheeler after spotting a train at

Sevvapet

level crossing recently. The train got delayed after it hit the two-wheeler. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested the man on Tuesday.

RPF personnel have been posted at level crossings and at stations to prevent people from trespassing.

In 2021-22, till Jan 2022, 1,402 people were arrested and prosecuted by the RPF for trespassing. A total fine of Rs 5 lakh was collected.

In 2019-20, 2,422 people were arrested by RPF for trespassing, and a fine of Rs 11.98 lakh was collected.

Railways has taken a slew of measures like removing encroachments, building walls at locations where people cross the tracks, counselling commuters and conducting awareness campaigns using scouts and guides to minimise people from trespassing.
