Chennai police arrest six bike racers after accident

The youths were racing their bikes from Theosophical Society to Light House on Kamarajar Salai for a prize of Rs 750 on Saturday evening. When they were nearing the DGS Dinakaran Salai and South Canal Road junction, one of them hit a bike and the bike rider, Natarajan, 30, a labourer from Kodungayur, suffered leg injuries.

CHENNAI: The Chennai police have arrested six youths, including two college students, for racing their bikes on the busy city roads and hitting another bike rider.
The youths were racing their bikes from Theosophical Society to Light House on Kamarajar Salai for a prize of Rs 750 on Saturday evening. When they were nearing the DGS Dinakaran Salai and South Canal Road junction, one of them hit a bike and the bike rider, Natarajan, 30, a labourer from Kodungayur, suffered leg injuries.

Natarajan was admitted to a private hospital.
However, the youths continued with the race. Passersby informed the city police control room about the accident, and a police team intercepted the youths near Santhome Church.
The Adyar traffic investigation wing police registered a case and arrested the youths, identified as M Anoop, 19, and P Jayam, 19, both are hailing from Thiruvanmiyur, M Yogesh, 20, of Teynampet, J Sasikumar, 20, and R Raja, 24, both hailing from Kotturpuram, and S Yogesh Kannan, 20, of Sriram Colony in Saidapet, under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code. The police seized three bikes from the youths.
The youths were produced before a court that remanded them in judicial custody.
Anoop is studying second-year engineering at a college near Tambaram and Yogesh is studying a live-streaming course at Loyola College. The other youths are working as bike mechanics.
