CHENNAI: The Chennai city police arrested a man for the
rape and
murder of a 74-year-old woman on the premises of the government peripheral hospital in Thiruvottiyur.
The arrested man has been identified as Jayakumar, 32, who is a carpenter. Jayakumar is married and has two children.
Police rescued the woman from the premises of the Thiruvottiyur hospital on February 12 morning.
She died on the same day while undergoing treatment in Government Stanley Hospital.
A police team led by Thiruvottiyur assistant commissioner of police Anandakumar tracked the suspect with the help of footages from CCTV cameras in around 50 locations.
Inspectors M G Sundar and Bhuvaneshwari were assigned to track the suspect. CCTV footages showed the man moving from the hospital towards Thazhangkuppam. The cops assigned a few more people who showed the suspect's photograph to many people and finally identified him as Jayakumar.
The police team nabbed Jayakumar. During questioning, he told the police that he was going to his parents’ home in Thiruvottiyur on February 11. Before visiting his parents, he dank liquor at a Tasmac shop. While he headed towards his parents’ home, the man saw a woman sleeping on the hospital premises and raped her. As she screamed for help, Jayakumar threw a stone on her head and escaped leaving her in the pool of blood.
Police said the woman had five sons, and they all are married and live in separate houses in Thiruvottiyur. Washermenpet deputy commissioner of police G Subbulakshmi said, "She quarrelled with her daughters-in-law and left the house and stayed on the hospital premises for a few days."
Jayakumar was remanded in judicial custody.
