Chennai Metro Rail Ltd completes Lighthouse and Thirumayilai tunnel work
Chennai: Getting to Marina Beach from Poonamallee may soon take just a train ride, as Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on Friday completed the tunnelling work between Lighthouse and Thirumayilai metro stations.
In a release, CMRL said the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Flamingo successfully completed the downline tunnel and achieved breakthrough on Friday.
The upline tunnel between the two stations was earlier completed by TBM Eagle on Feb 9. The section forms part of the 26.1-km Corridor-4 (Lighthouse–Poonamallee Bypass).
The 1,985-m tunnel, constructed by Cemindia Projects Limited, runs beneath some of the city's most sensitive and congested zones, including the Lighthouse area, the All India Radio campus, the Russian Embassy zone, Rosary Church, the MRTS bridge, and the Buckingham Canal.
"The drive navigated challenging geological conditions, including rocky strata, shallow overburden, deepest overburden due to stacked tunnel configuration, and unforeseen gas pockets," CMRL said. TNN

Chennai, the bustling Metropolis and city of magnificent distances deserves multimodal transport. Metro train is a fast but costly answer while Rlys are time tested and relatively much more cost efficient, pocket friendly means to commuters. Cost break- even points for Metro trains are faraway, perhaps will never meet, even while charging fares many times more than Rly owned MRTS. In this connection, proposal of TN to convert MRTS corridor to CMRL is unprecedented reversal of a central investment and defies economics logic. The city requires cheap transport with season ticket benefits for millions of commoners as well which is exactly served by MRTS. The idea of owning MRTS and sharing it's infrastructure and operations by a different entity called CMRL is avoidable and absolutely unnecessary for optimum cost saving. Now the MRTS is completely built up to St.Thomas mount with relatively much lesser costs of operation and connecting suburban terminals of Rly on a single ticket .As Metro is having separate lines, the parallel line from Adambakkam to St.Thomas mount will become infructuous too after spending hundreds of crores on construction. Better to run the MRTS under Rlys as usual incurring lesser marginal costs. Converting a heavily subsidised central govt transport utility to CMRL will be extravagance and retrograde.Read allPost comment
