Chennai’s metro network gets a big boost
Chennai Metro Phase-2 is moving steadily, with nearly 40km of elevated corridors targeted for completion by March 2027. Once operational, the expanded network will improve connectivity, reduce road congestion and offer faster, smoother travel across the city.
Wider roads on the way
As viaduct construction wraps up, CMRL plans to remove barricades in phases. This means many major roads will soon regain full width, making driving easier and safer while improving traffic flow in key corridors.
90% of elevated lines nearing operation
With 28km opening this year and more next year, close to 90% of the elevated network will be functional. This major milestone will allow commuters to shift from crowded roads to high-capacity metro services.
Corridor-5 nears the finish line
Nearly 39km from Chennai Trade Centre to Sholinganallur is nearing completion on Corridor-5. This long elevated route will connect central Chennai to the IT corridor, improving east-west mobility across the city.
First phase-2 line opening soon
The Vadapalani–Poonamallee section will be the first operational part of Phase-2. It marks the beginning of a new travel option for commuters, offering faster and more reliable transport than surface roads.
Underground network taking shape
After elevated lines, underground stretches will follow by 2028. This will complete the full 116km Phase-2 network, ensuring citywide metro coverage linking suburbs, business districts and residential hubs.
Key links ready by 2026
The Koyambedu–Chennai Trade Centre section is targeted for June 2026. This important connector will link transport hubs and business zones, helping commuters save time and avoid busy surface routes.

Phase-2 is designed to deliver faster travel, lower pollution and reduced congestion. As more sections open, Chennai is set to enjoy a modern, efficient public transport system built for future growth.
