Son of a retired policeman, the accused, P Madan Kumar, 32 had told his neighbours that he was himself a cop and a real estate contractor. He had a fake police identity card and a police jeep fitted with sirens.

Police said Madan had taken money from two people 10 lakh from one Shankar of Sriperumbudur promising to build his house, and 7lakh from one Vetriselvan promising to get him a government job. Police sprung into action after receiving multiple complaints against Madan.

Two years ago, he had come in contact with Lakshmi Priya of Surapet through Facebook. After befriending her, he told her that he would be able to help her sort her personal issues since he was a cop. Lakshmi Priya had a difference of opinion with her husband and sought Madan's help in order to file a divorce.

Madan had demanded 13 lakh to help her get the divorce. Though he took the money two years ago, he failed to get her the divorce. Whenever she asked him to return the money back, he threatened her with the names of senior police officials.

The woman then lodged a complaint with Puzhal police, who nabbed him on Saturday night. He was found in possession of a police uniform that was purchased at a shop from Chetpet, apart from a fake identity card. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
