CHENNAI: A man murdered his wife and hanged himself in Kancheepuram on Friday, allegedly after a quarrel over their financial condition, police said.
The deceased Devi Prasad, 45, and his wife Saraswathi, 42, were residents of Ennaikaran Street in Kancheepuram. While Devi Prasad was working as a driver in a travel agency in Chennai, Saraswathi was working as a domestic help in a few homes.
Since the lockdown, both had lost their jobs and would often quarrel because of financial stress. On Friday evening, a similar fight erupted during which Devi Prasad stabbed his wife with a kitchen knife and later hanged himself, police said.
Police sources said the neighbours had heard screams, but thought it was a usual fight. When the couple did not step out of the house for a long time, they went in to find them dead. The bodies were sent to the Kancheepuram Government Hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered.
