A painter committed suicide by setting himself on fire after he was physically assaulted by a police inspector in Puzhal, Chennai on Sunday.​

CHENNAI: A painter committed suicide by setting himself on fire after he was physically assaulted by a police inspector in Puzhal, Chennai on Sunday.
The victim has been identified as Srinivasan and the inspector as Bensam.
Joint commissioner of police, North zone V Balakrishnan placed Bensam under suspension.
A police source said that a complaint was filed against painter Srinivasan by his landlord Rajendran – an AIADMK functionary – as Srinivasan did not pay his house rent for the last three months.

Following this, the inspector went to Srinivasan’s house at 7 pm, on Saturday, and physically assaulted him before his wife and two children.
Srinivasan set himself ablaze as he could not bear the humiliation.
He was rushed to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to the burns on Sunday.
