Chennai Corporation retrieves dilapidated drama theatre from encroachers

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Friday retrieved a 13,293 square-foot big dilapidated drama theatre in Royapuram that was encroached by private entities.


HR and CE minister P K Sekar Babu, who inspected the area, said the theatre had historical significance as it was a bedrock to propagate the Dravidian ideologies in those days.

"Former chief ministers Anna, 'Kalaignar' Karunanidhi, M G Ramachandran and late actor M R Radha used this platform to do performances and speeches. This theatre was lost due to encroachments. Now, we will see how to revive this and generate revenue for the civic body,” said Sekar Babu, who represents the nearby Harbour constituency.

The minister said the corporation had also removed encroachments from a parcel of 1680 square-metre land in Angappan Nayakkar Street. "This land will be used to expand a corporation middle school where 487 students are studying," he said.
