CHENNAI: The Greater
Chennai Corporation
commissioner has been made the authority to grant permit for laying underground telecommunication cables, including optical fibre lines.
The change was effected by a government order issued by the department of information technology on February 21, 2018. The GO empowered the collectors in respective districts and the
commissioner
of the Greater Chennai Corporation in Chennai district as the permit authority.
"Previously, the norm was to obtain an NOC from the corporation and then obtain a right of way order from the IT department," a corporation official said.
Subsequent to the order, the city corporation directed a private telecommunication firm to submit indemnity bonds, before taking up further underground installation of
optical fibre cables
.
