Anticipating heavy traffic on the roads, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police have been asked to take charge at all the 400 signals in the city.
Police personnel from law and order, and traffic wing will be posted at all bus terminals from where buses will ply from Tuesday. Traffic personnel have been asked to remove vehicles parked for a long time on the main roads as these would block traffic.
A senior traffic police official said spots have been identified where more vehicles are expected to flow and additional police personnel will be posted there.
Traffic police personnel will draw up a list of the number of buses plying from each terminus to ensure streamlining of traffic. They will also take note of the crowd in the buses and changes will be made accordingly.
“We will also study the traffic flow on the busy stretches and post police strength on need basis,” said a senior police officer.
The jurisdictional officer will ensure that traffic policemen have gloves, masks and sanitisers.
Motorists have been flouting traffic rules during the lockdown. With no policing, two-wheeler riders have been venturing out without helmets and driving down the wrong lane had become convenient for many to avoid barricade.
But the traffic police department said checks for all traffic violations will be intensified and errant motorists will be slapped fines.
“They have been asked to handle the violators as usual in a strict manner but have been advised to take all necessary precautions before intercepting them,” said the officer.
