CHENNAI: Four men kidnapped a Canadian national near Vadapalani on Wednesday and stole his passport, mobile phone, laptop, ATM cards and $300 (around 23,000). The vehicle used for kidnapping Bharath Raj, 47, has been identified, police said, adding that a hunt is on for the culprits.

Police said Bharath Raj, who recently came to Chennai to visit a relative, went to a mall in Vadapalani to get a tattoo. Inside the mall, a man approached him and began a conversation.

After gaining his confidence, the man said he would take him to the best studio in the city where many celebrities including popular film stars got tattooed. Believing him, Bharath Raj went along with the man.

The two stepped out of the mall and got into a car. At Arumbakkam, three more men people got in and all four men started attacking Bharath Raj, police said, quoting from the complaint.

The driver of the car drove around the city for nearly four hours throughout which the gang attacked and robbed him. Near the Porur toll gate, the gang pushed Bharath Raj out of the car and sped away.

He was admitted to a private hospital for treatment after which he lodged a complaint.

The Maduravoyal police registered a case against unknown people on charges of kidnapping, assault and robbery.
