CHENNAI: The 108 Emergency Medical Services (EMRI) activated its control centre in Pudukottai in the wake of Cyclone Fengal.
With the new centre, EMRI will ensure uninterrupted emergency medical response services in the event of disruptions caused by gusty winds and downpour in Chennai and adjoining districts.

The new control centre in Pudukottai will be staffed by 30 trained personnel who will be responsible for handling emergency calls.

“In case we have to close the control room in Chennai due to deluge, power outage, or infrastructure damage, the Pudukottai centre will be fully equipped to take over operations,” said EMRI Head M Selvakumar.

Cyclone Fengal Live Updates:

The agency, outsourced for emergency services by the state govt, earlier faced problems in getting staff to come to work. "This time, to avoid disruptions in emergency response due to transportation issues, we will retain emergency response officers at the office, providing them with necessary accommodation and food,” he said.

Meanwhile, ambulance pilots have been asked to coordinate with police and fire in case of rescue operations in flooded areas. The pilots have been asked to carry extrication tools and ensure all electrical and electronic components like fog lights, blinkers, lights, and wipers are in good working condition.

Staff have been asked to keep mobiles on full charge and stock up on diesel for gensets.
