Chennai: Bank employee on beach mugged, 2 held

A 29-year-old man was mugged by a three-member gang, including two juveniles, when he was walking at the Marina beach on Monday night. Police said, Akhil Varghese Paul, a private bank employee, was attacked with a beer bottle and robbed of a mobile phone at 10.30pm.

CHENNAI: A 29-year-old man was mugged by a three-member gang, including two juveniles, when he was walking at the Marina beach on Monday night. Police said, Akhil Varghese Paul, a private bank employee, was attacked with a beer bottle and robbed of a mobile phone at 10.30pm.
Akhil, who resides in Koyembedu, was walking on the beach when he was intercepted by three youths and asked to hand over his valuables.

The trio hit him with a beer bottle when Akhil refused and tried to run away. They soon snatched his mobile phone and escaped the spot. The passersby, who saw him hurt, came to Akhil's rescue and rushed him to the hospital.
Based on a complaint, Marina police filed an FIR and arrested P Sabari, 22, of Triplicane. Investigations revealed that the two youths who accompanied him were juveniles - a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old.
Police arrested the 14-year-old and sent him to the correctional facility and Sabari was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Police are searching for the teenager involved in the crime.
