Charges against two teachers dropped

Kallakurichi: About a year after a private school at Kaniyamoor in Kallakurichi district witnessed largescale violence and mob vandalism following the death of a girl student on campus, the CB-CID has dropped the charges against two teachers.The agency, which was handed over the case following the violence, laid a 1,200-page chargesheet before the chief judicial magistrate of Villupuram district a few days ago.The court then issued summons to the deceased student R Srimathi’s mother, Selvi, asking whether she had any objection to dropping of charges against the two teachers. When Selvi approached the CB-CID, the agency directed her to approach the court to get a copy of the chargesheet. Srimathi, a Class XII student in Sakthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Kallakurichi district, was found dead on the campus on July 13, 2022.Police arrested school correspondent C Ravikumar, secretary R Shanthi, principal S Sivasankaran, mathematics teacher cum warden J Krithiga and chemistry teacher P Haripriya in connection with the death of the student. The CB-CID has now dropped the charges against Krithiga and Haripriya. The agency also arrested more than 100 people involved in damaging public and private properties.A joint team of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and Tamil Nadu State Commission for Protection of Child Rights led by NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo, which inspected the schools and its hostels, had flagged some preliminary lapses in the process of investigation of the incident.
