Centum effect in Chennai: Engineering, BCom seats hard to get
CHENNAI: Engineering admissions are expected to be tougher like last year, with 114 state board students scoring 200 out of 200 marks with centums in physics, chemistry, and maths .
Last year, 134 students got 200 out of 200 marks in the rank list that include all the boards. Experts predict a marginal dip in cut-off marks for engineering admissions with fewer students scoring full marks in maths this year.
There will be a tough competition to get BCom seats in city colleges as the number of centums soared both in accountancy and commerce subjects. As many as 6,573 students secured full marks in accountancy which jumped by 44% compared to last year while 5678 students scored centums in commerce this year it also increased by 22% as compared to 2022.
Career consultants predict that the cut-off marks in colleges like Loyola may even touch 100% for BCom general category seats this year.
"Last year, the cut-off for Loyola College, Stella Maris College for Women was touching 98% for BCom seats. This year, the cut-off will cross 99% or even touch 100% like in such famous Delhi colleges as Lady Shri Ram College for Women," career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi.
He further said that even the CBSE commerce stream exams were easier this year and those students also may get high scores. The admission to BCom is based on the scores in four subjects including accountancy, commerce.
Gitanjali Vasudevan, a school topper with 595 marks out of 600 marks with centums in commerce and accountancy said the question paper was quite easy and the evaluation of answer scripts was also liberal this year.
Overall, the number of students scoring full marks in at least one subject has increased by 35% this year in subjects like chemistry, computer science as well.
"In the last ten years, students will face toughest competition this year to get admission into top arts and science colleges. Students who have secured 99% will find it tough to get BCom admissions in general category due to more centums," said K John, headmaster of the Thiru Vi Ka Higher Secondary School in Shenoy Nagar.
In maths, the number of centums has come down from 1858 last year to 690 this year. Teachers and students said the maths paper had many creative questions. "The maths paper was challenging, interesting and creative. It was not that tough. If we know the basic concepts, it is quite solvable," said Shwetha V, a student from city school, who scored a centum in maths. She was one of the toppers in her school with 594 out of 600 marks.
She further said the chemistry and physics papers were also very easy this time. The number of centums in chemistry more than doubled from 1500 last year to 3909 this year. The number of students securing full marks in physics also increased from 634 last year to 812 this year.
Jayaprakash Gandhi said the cut-off for engineering admissions may come down marginally by one or two marks and the cut-off will remain like last year.
The number of centums in computer science subjects also increased from 3827 last year to 4618 this year.
