CHENNAI: Chennai Metrowater has designed and developed a machine to clean clogged sewage lines without anyone entering manholes.
Metrowater has developed the machine after the Union ministry of housing and urban development announced a ‘Technology Challenge’ under the Amruth scheme.
The machine uses the ‘ball passing’ method to clean sewage lines. This proposal has been sent to the central government.
The Centre in turn sent a member from the public health and environment wing to Chennai to see how the machine is working.
Metrowater executive director T Prabhu Shankar along with Metrowater chief engineer R Sivashanmugam demonstrated it to the expert from the Centre, Sathish Kumar.
The field demonstration with machine was held in a manhole in AH Block at Anna Nagar.
A short film has been made on how the new machine is working.
“This entry from Metrowater will be viewed along with other entries before the winner is declared,” Sathish Kumar said.
