Union minister of state for water resources Sanjeev Kumar Balyan has said that there was no proposal (dams) in Palar basin from Andhra Pradesh government for techno-economic appraisal in Central Water Commission (CWC).
The CWC carries out techno-economic appraisal of major and medium irrigation projects, which are planned on inter-state river/river basins. Thereafter, the project is considered for acceptance by the advisory committee in the ministry. "A major/medium project should be taken up only after techno-economic appraisal by CWC and acceptance by the advisory committee. No proposal in Palar basin from AP government has been received by the CWC," the minister said in a letter to Trichy Siva, a copy of which was released here.
Siva had expressed concerns in Rajya Sabha recently over recent construction of check dams by the AP government on Palar river. The inter-state agreement 1892 of States of Mysore and Madras prohibits construction of any new irrigation reservoir or anicut without the consent of the Madras government across Palar river.
