Centre clears two more new judges for Madras high court

CHENNAI: The Madras high court is all set to get two more new judges, as the Union law ministry has cleared names of two advocates – Sundar Mohan and K Kumaresh Babu – for appointment as additional judges of the chartered HC.
Sundar Mohan and Kumaresh Babu were on the list of six names sent by the Madras high court in 2021. All the six names were cleared for appointment by the Supreme Court collegium on February 16, 2022.

However, the Union law ministry okayed only two names – Justice Nidumolu Mala and Justice S Sounthar – in March 2022. The present nod for another two names has come after more than three months.
Two other names, that of R John Sathyan and Abdul Ghani Abdul Hameed, are still awaiting the law ministry’s nod.
With their arrival, the total number of judges in the Madras high court will go up to 59, as against the sanctioned strength of 75. The court tops the nation with 13 woman judges.
