CHENNAI: A 30-year-old carpenter in Thoraipakkam committed suicide on Friday night by slitting his throat. He is said to have taken the extreme step as his wife had left him to live with her parents.
According to police, the carpenter, Viji alias Vijayakumar, knocked at the door of his landlord Siva around 10.30 pm. He was bleeding profusingly. Siva rushed him to a nearby hospital and later to the government hospital in Royapettah, where doctors declared him brought dead.
"Inquiries revealed that Viji had entered into an altercation with his wife Muthulakshmi a few days ago and she went to her parents' house.
We immediately questioned her but she did not seem to be behind this. Later, we came to know that he had already attempted suicide in a similar fashion after a quarrel with his father," Thoraipakkam assistant commissioner of police K N Murali told TOI.
According to Siva, the landlord, Viji had recently shifted to his house in Thoraipakkam and was in search of a job. He was a habitual drinker and often came home drunk. He is said to have told his wife that he would commit suicide if she left home.
