DMDK leader Vijayakanth, his wife Premalatha and several hundred partymen were arrested in the city on Thursday when they tried to form a human chain, defying police orders.
Vijayakanth's prohibition campaign has drawn a certain amount of skepticism as it comes in the wake of memes ridiculing the leader for his alleged drinking habit.
Police refused to give permission for the agitation.

Their arrests triggered protests on Poonamallee High Road, with the cadres staging road blocks at several junctions. Traffic went haywire in Anna Nagar, Thirumangalam, Kilpauk, Aminjikarai and Arumbakkam, with vehicles piling up for more than two hours.
Police lathicharged protesters who gathered near the party headquarters near Koyambedu for unlawful assembly . The unruly cadres broke the rear windshield of an MTC bus, in which Vijayakanth and others were taken to a marriage hall in Nerkundram, causing tense moments for the police and passersby . Among the arrested were MLAs V C Chandirakumar, Anagai D Murugesan, B Parthasarathy , K Nallathambi and C H Sekar.
