Care for Vaseegara on the violin by candlelight?
A music concert in the light of thousands of candles, with no microphone to amplify the music the hypnotic effect of the famed Candlelight concerts had taken European cities by storm soon after the first was held in Madrid, Spain in 2019.
The concept which travelled to India earlier this year is being launched in Chennai as well. "We are premiering in Chennai's Museum Theatre on Nov 15 with a programme featuring movie soundtracks performed by local musicians," said Deepa Bajaj, country manager, India, of Live Your City, a brand of Fever, which conducts the concerts. On the tentative track list are Harris Jayaraj's Vaseegara, A R Rahman's Uyire, Rajesh Murugesan's Malare, Devi Sri Prasad's Srivalli, Anirudh Ravichander's Kannazhaga, Why This Kolaveri Di? and others besides popular Bollywood tracks.
The concerts will be a series; with a tribute to Coldplay and a purely western classical event Candlelight: From Mozart to Chopin premiering in Dec in Chennai. "Tributes to contemporary artists such as The Beatles, Queen, ABBA, Coldplay, and Ed Sheeran are all part of the concerts," said Deepa. Tributes to A R Rahman or Ilaiyaraaja are possibilities for Chennai in the future, added a representative of Fever.
"While western classical instrumental concerts have never been as popular in Chennai as in Bengaluru or Mumbai, these concerts aim to make them more accessible to a wider audience by partnering with venues that are part of each city's cultural heritage," said Deepa, adding that the main objective is to reach a wider audience, including those who may have never considered attending a classical music concert.
"In India, we've incorporated Indian classical music as well, featuring traditional instruments such as the sarangi and the tabla."
The lineup of local artists for the concerts is being prepared currently. The concerts have been held in 100 cities across the world so far, including Mumbai, Delhi and a few tier 2 cities in India. The series will be travelling to Puducherry as well soon
