Canadian nat’l moves HC to free his Indian girlfriend

Chennai: A Canadian national’s attempt to free his 19-year-old lover, an Indian citizen and resident of Dharmapuri, from the ‘illegal detention’ of her parents and marry her went in vain, as the girl chose to go with her parents and informed the same to the Madras high court.
Accepting her decision, a division bench of Madras high court disposed of the habeas corpus plea moved by Jesse Edward James Gionet.
According to the 32-year-old Canadian, he fell in love with the girl over social media and came down to India to marry her with his parents approval.
But the girl's parents opposed their marriage and forcefully took her to Dharmapuri from Coimbatore, he said. Since there was no answer for the several phone calls made to the girl and no action on part of the police on his complaint, he moved the high court through a habeas corpus plea seeking to trace and produce his girlfriend. When the plea came up for hearing before a division bench of Justice M Sundar and Justice R Sakthivel, the girl and her parents appeared before the court. The girl informed the court that she is willing to go with her parents and not the petitioner. Since the girl was a major, the court recorded her decision and disposed of the plea.
