Chennai: Lalitha Bharathi, the granddaughter of poet Subramania Bharathi, passed away at the age of 94 on Monday. Several leaders including chief minister M K Stalin and governor R N Ravi condoled her death.
Lalitha Bharathi was the daughter of Bharathi’s eldest daughter Thangamma. She had been a music teacher and composer for more than 40 years and feminist. Her son Rajkumar Bharati was a Carnatic musician, and has sung movie songs under M S Viswanathan and Ilayaraja.
Chief minister Stalin said, “I am saddened to hear that the great poet, composer and granddaughter of Mahakavi Bharath, Lalitha Bharathi died due to natural causes.” She had worked as a music composer for 40 years and was involved in spreading her grandfather Bharathi’s songs, he said. “I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends and Tamil enthusiasts,” he said.
Governor R N Ravi expressed grief over the demise of the eminent singer, and dedicated music teacher.
