CHENNAI: A 52-year-old bank manager jumped off the Kotturpuram Bridge on Sunday evening.
Police said, at 6.15pm, Radhamani got off his scooty at the bridge, climbed up the pavement and jumped into the Adyar River below.
Radhamani, a resident of Srinagar Colony in Saidapet, worked as a senior manager at
Indian Bank in Royapettah.
Officials from the Kotturpuram police station said, "Radhamani has a history of anxiety and depression related problems.
He had been undergoing medical treatment for the last five years."
Radhamani is survived by his wife and daughter.
The corporation had identified Kotturpuram Bridge as a suicide hotspot five months ago and began construction of a suicide barrier wall at the bridge. A concrete wall and one-meter vertical metal hand grills curving inward were to be built to prevent Suicides.
With the construction left half complete, Radhamani was able to climb up the concrete wall and take the plunge.
On December 20, 2012, Carnatic vocalist Nithyasree's husband Mahadevan jumped to death from the Kotturpuram Bridge.
In the last ten years there have been 20 suicide deaths at the bridge.
