CHENNAI: Miscreants stole a bag containing Rs 3 lakh after diverting the attention of an autorickshaw driver in Chennai on Thursday.
Police said M Lourduraj, 57, of East Tambaram and his sister, N Sugitha, 46, arranged money to pay for the treatment of another sister’s son who was admitted to a private hospital in Kilpauk.
While they were travelling from East Tambaram to Kilpauk, they stopped the autorickshaw in Aminjikarai to buy food for their sister and her son, Ritish.
Sugitha went to an eatery to buy food while Lourduraj sat on the driver’s seat. The cash bag was kept in a box in front of the driver’s seat.
An attention diversion gang dropped some currency notes near the auto and informed Lourduraj. Lourduraj saw the notes in the denomination of Rs 10 on the road. He got down to collect the cash. When he returned to the driver’s seat, he found the box open and the cash bag missing.
An investigation officer said, “The miscreants could have watched Sugitha drawing cash from a bank in East Tambaram. They would have followed them for an opportunity to steal the cash.”
Based on Lourduraj's complaint, the Aminjikarai police registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspects.
