CHENNAI: A group of free thinking youngsters in Tamil Nadu has decided to bring about a 'shift' in the state's

politics

. The manifesto of "Young People for Politics" (YPP), which will be released virtually (on Zoom) on February 14 after two months of research, reflects, its members say, their commitment to social justice and democratic values.

It will be shared and circulated among the public and

political parties

. "In the present political culture, the needs and aspirations of youth are often unacknowledged, citing their age and inexperience. Our aim is to bring about a paradigm shift in the socio-political landscape of Tamil Nadu," said E Swaminathan, a member of the YPP's .

There are many socio-economic and political reasons why political engagement of young citizens is not thriving in the state. The restrictions on campus politics, a negative perception of politics itself, are some of the main causes. The manifesto, according to Swaminathan, will have a set of achievable goals.

"In Tamil Nadu where one in every four voters is below the age of 30, the average age of an elected representative is above 55. The manifesto will ensure a near equal distribution of social, economic and political policy ideas. All policy ideas are supported by facts. We have cited only credible sources," he said.

The team comprises students, activists, doctors, teachers and software professionals, all below the age of 30. While developing the manifesto, key guiding principles of self-respect, giving emphasis to equality and secularism, were followed.

"All policy decisions are arrived at through discussions and debates, as we followed the principle of majority voting. The discussions and debates were based on ideas alone. No personal attacks were entertained," he said.

"We had begun extending invitations to young leaders from various political parties to be a part of the release. Coincidentally, it was announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be visiting Chennai on the same day [February 14] to inaugurate the new metro line. We understand that most political personalities will be busy with the event. However, we will release the manifesto on the decided date," said Swaminathan.
