American College alumni association institutes award in memory of Sankaraiah
CHENNAI: Veteran Communist leader N Sankaraiah who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 101 will have an award instituted in his name by the alumni association of his alma mater, the American College in Madurai.
The award, instituted by the American College Alumni Association-Madras Center, will go to a former student of the 142-year-old college for eminence in public life. It would be given to the awardee at the alumni carnival at the college on December 9, said association president P Chandrasekaran.
There would be at least 10 more awards instituted in the names of its illustrious former students such as Justice A Alagiriswami award (eminence in law and the constitution), Krishnammal Jegannathan award (selfless service to the nation), Tyagi Lakshmikanthan Bharathi Award (civil service and public administration), film director Mahendran award (film and entertainment), actor Vivek award (environment) and Dr G Venkataswamy award (community service), said Chandrasekaran.
There are four awards for teaching excellence and academics, and they have been instituted in memory of top professors like Dr Paul L Love, Dr M A Thangaraj, G Devarajan and Savarirayan.
The day-long carnival will begin with a rally around the American College in the morning. It will be followed by the main event wherein ministers R Sakkarapani, P Moorthy and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, besides Tamil Nadu advocate general R Shunmugasundaram, will participate and deliver speeches.
The alumni association plans to honour the septuagenarian professors of the college on the occasion. It has lined up career guidance and quiz programmes too, followed by cultural events in the evening.
