The move comes after the retiring rooms of the airport were demolished when the old domestic terminal was pulled down to build an integrated terminal as part of the phase 2 expansion of the airport. Retiring rooms are needed for passengers who arrive from other cities to board connecting flights.

AAI is planning to fast track the process, said civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu in his reply to Union

minister

of state for shipping and finance and Kanyakumari MP Pon Radhakrishnan.

On May 18, 2018,

Pon

Radhakrishnan wrote to the civil aviation minister seeking retiring rooms for transit domestic and international passengers at the Chennai airport. Responding to the letter, the civil aviation minister stated that AAI will also provide a 50 twin bed sharing hotel-like accommodation as part of the modernisation works that will be taken up at the Chennai airport.

Suresh Prabhu added that in the meantime, AAI will set up the 20-bed retiring room on a fast track basis. Pon Radhakrishnan expressed confidence that the retiring room would soon be completed.
