‘Advocates too should mediate to settle disputes’
Chennai: In most litigations, the dispute can be resolved if the parties sit together and discuss, instead of approaching courts, Justice K Chandru, former judge of Madras high court, said here on Friday. It is not that judges only should adjudicate disputes between parties; lawyers should also take proactive steps to resolve the issues between the parties, he added. Justice Chandru was addressing a gathering of the Labour Law Practitioners Association in Chennai, to felicitate senior members of the association — advocates S Senthilnathan and S Arumugam — on their completion of 50 years at the Bar. Earlier, the two advocates were felicitated by Justice Sunder Mohan, judge, Madras high court. The judge then unveiled a portrait of former judge of the Supreme Court, Justice V R Krishna Iyer."Only a few who study law take up practice, and only a few sustain in it for over 10 years. But to stay in the profession for 50 years is a feat," Justice Sunder Mohan said. While the event was presided over by veteran labour lawyer N G R Prasad, senior advocate K M Ramesh, and advocates Balan Haridas, S Ayyathurai, and S Ravi, all office-bearers of the association, participated.
