MADURAI: Thousands of devotees participated in the

Aadi Pooram car festival

at Srivilliputhur

Sri Andal

temple on Sunday.

The

Aadi Pooram

car festival is one of the important festivals at the temple, as it celebrates the birth star of temple main deity Sri Andal.

The festival began with flag hoisting on July 27. The idols of Sri Andal and

Lord Rajamannar

were taken through temple’s streets on all the days of the festival.

On Sunday morning, the deities were placed on the grandly decorated chariot. The chariot started its journey around 8.05am.

Tamil Nadu minister for dairy and milk development K T Rajendra Bhalaji were among those who pulled the car in the morning. While devotees pulled the car with ropes attached to it, two bulldozers were used to push the car from behind.

Basic amenities, including drinking water facilities, had been arranged by the temple and district administrations for the benefit of the people. Special buses were operated from many parts of Virudhunagar district and other southern districts.

Over 2,000 police personnel were deployed for security.
