CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has announced that 57 people died in the state due to
Cyclone Gaja that hit the coast last month. The final assessment report of district collectors revealed that five deaths took place during rescue and restoration activities. One case is being inquired.
According to the list put out by the commissionerate of revenue administration, nearly 40 of the deaths were reported due to wall collapses in Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Trichy, Sivaganga and
Cuddalore
. Landslide in Dindigul claimed four lives. Murugesan (Pudukottai), Natarajan (Thanjavur), Shanmugam (Nagapattinam), and Murugan (Dindigul) died while restoring power supply and clearing debris.
