Five policemen on night patrol sustained injuries after the driver of their vehicle smashed into a parapet wall and the vehicle overturned near Maraimalai Nagar on Tuesday night.

CHENNAI: Five policemen on night patrol sustained injuries after the driver of their vehicle smashed into a parapet wall and the vehicle overturned near Maraimalai Nagar on Tuesday night. Police said the policemen Karthik, Sunder, Selvam, Satish and Murugan were on night rounds and had gone up to Singperumal Koil when the incident took place. Passersby and police rushed the injured men to a private hospital in Potheri where they are being treated.

Police said the policemen were attached to the Maraimalai Nagar station and were asked to beef up security along GST Road in the wake of increasing crimes and to carry out vehicle checks to nab habitual offenders and chain snatchers. The five men had completed vehicle checks and had gone up to Singaperumal Koil on receiving information about the movement of a gang of criminals in that area. When they could not trace them they decided to comb the area near Vandalur and Maraimalai Nagar when the accident occurred.
Police said the five were out of danger and would be discharged soon.
