3 SRM students killed, 3 others hurt as car rams median

Around 6am, police said, the hired car, with Siddharth Singh at the wheel and Shivangi in the front passenger seat, was near the municipal corporation office in Maraimalainagar when the accident occurred. It had swerved speedily to the right, hit the median and smashed into a tree on the median before coming to a halt. Two students in the back seat died in stantly, while the other was declared dead on arrival in hospital.
One side of the car, hired from a private company, was completely smashed in. "The worst impact was felt on the side and back of the car as the vehicle had crashed onto the right side," a police officer said.
The group had booked the cab on Friday and had travelled to Puducherry before returning that night. Earlier on Saturday morning, they went out for tea to a shop in Mahindra City and were returning to their home in Estancia, a residential property in Potheri, when they met with the accident.
Some students in the university said Siddharth, Neil and Samradh were pursuing computer science, while Harsh Raj was an IT student and Nillu Singh a biotech student. They hailed from Delhi, Patna and
On the Kattankulathur campus, many were unaware of the accident. While most were busy with the convocation, friends of the accident victims could be seen at the SRM Hospital, anxiously waiting to know how their friends were recovering. "We aren't sure how exactly the accident occurred. We just got to know it happened around 6 am," they said.
The Maraimalainagar police registered a case under the IPC Section 304 (A) (death caused due to negligence) and are investigating. The bodies of deceased were shifted to Chengalpet Government Hospital soon after the accident.
