CHENNAI: Monday marked the 25th death anniversary - and the 45th birth anniversary - of Sarika Shah, a student of Ethiraj College who died because of sexual harassment by a group of nine men on the road.
Her parents and brother "celebrated" her birthday rather than observing her death anniversary, praying for a safer place for girls. "Every July 24, we celebrate her birthday. All the family members assemble and go to a temple," Sarika's brother Dipesh Shah told TOI. "We feel she is somewhere around us." He says laws have become stricter since his sister's death.
"The government should start a portal to take complaints of harassment, and students should be on their guard," he says.
In today's edition, TOI brings you a 360-degree coverage of the case that catalysed changes, yet how women's safety remains a concern.
