1/9

Direct port connectivity boost

The 20.6-km elevated corridor will create seamless connectivity between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, allowing container trucks to bypass city roads. This dedicated freight route is expected to reduce congestion in core areas and ensure faster cargo movement to and from the port.

2/9

Decongestion of city roads

By shifting heavy vehicles off arterial roads, the project will significantly ease traffic in localities like Egmore and central Chennai. Commuters can expect smoother daily travel with fewer bottlenecks and reduced travel stress during peak hours.

3/9

Faster travel time

Once operational, the expressway is expected to cut travel time between the port and Maduravoyal drastically. What currently takes over an hour during peak congestion could be reduced to minutes, improving overall transport efficiency.

4/9

Economic growth catalyst

Improved logistics will enhance Chennai’s position as a major trade hub. Faster cargo evacuation from the port will support industries, exporters and small businesses, boosting regional economic activity and attracting fresh investments.

5/9

Dedicated freight corridor

The elevated design ensures that container traffic remains separated from passenger vehicles. This dedicated freight movement enhances safety, minimises accidents and ensures uninterrupted operations for logistics operators.

6/9

Modern engineering along Cooum

Constructed along the Cooum River stretch, the project showcases advanced urban engineering solutions. Elevated pillars and structured design help optimise limited urban space while maintaining connectivity without major land acquisition challenges.

7/9

Reduced fuel consumption

With smoother and faster transit for heavy vehicles, fuel consumption is expected to decline. Reduced idling in traffic will also help lower vehicular emissions, contributing to improved air quality in central Chennai.

8/9

Strengthens national highway link

The corridor will integrate seamlessly with national highways at Maduravoyal, improving long-distance freight connectivity across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. This strengthens the state’s logistics backbone.

9/9

Long-term urban infrastructure upgrade

The expressway represents a major upgrade in Chennai’s transport infrastructure. Designed for future demand, it prepares the city for growing trade volumes while improving urban mobility standards for years to come.

This stretch should have come for use a decade back, if only not stalled by a late leader on the ground that it was a project conceived by DMK Govt. Fortunately, that leader was convicted under PC Act and is no more to protest against completion of the project. Her party men including PM, still adore her visionary!
