CHENNAI: The Shastri Nagar police on Wednesday arrested 28-year-old K Subramanian, a supplier of mineral water cans, and one of his accomplices for allegedly stealing two gold chains, six bangles and a 25-sovereign bracelet from the house of a retired college professor in Adyar. A hunt is on for a third accused.
According to the police, Subramanian has a shop in Indira Nagar and supplies water cans to several houses in the surrounding areas.
He had noticed R Dhandapani (65), a former professor of Loyola College, and his wife Sargunam Bai (61), living by themselves in their house on 5th Street in Padmanabha Nagar, and planned the robbery with B Raja Muhammad (31) and Jai alias Subhash.
Accordingly, the three entered the home around 7.30 pm on Wednesday last. "Brandishing a knife, they gagged the couple and removed 25 soverigns of gold jewellery. Before fleeing, they scratched the couple's hands with knives, drawing blood," Shastri Nagar inspector (crime) Senthil Kumar told Times of India.
A special team arrested Subramanian and Raja Muhammad in Adyar and seized Rs 2.5 lakh worth of gold jewellery. "It was a well-planed attempt. We first caught Subramanian and based on his information nabbed Raja near a slum. We are searching for Jai alias Subhash," said Senthil Kumar.
