150 crows, three dogs poisoned to death in TN village

died after eating poison-laced rice in a fishing village near

Poompuhar

in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday morning. Inquiries revealed that some villagers had kept the poison-laced rice on a roadside to kill stray dogs. Crows too ate them and died.

The carcasses of the dogs and crows were found in in a fishing village near the harbour. On being alerted by Kavery Poompattinam village panchayat president Sasikumar, block medical officer Dr R Rajmohan, health inspector D Karthik and others rushed to the spot.

Later, two veterinary doctors performed postmortem on the carcasses of the dogs and some crows. The postmortem revealed that the dogs and crows died after consuming poison-laced rice.

The Poompuhar police registered a case and began efforts to nab the culprits.

The carcasses were buried in a deep pit. The village had been disinfected, health inspector Karthik told TOI.
