15 abandoned cars removed from roadside as part of drive

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has removed 15 abandoned and rusted cars from the roadside on Saturday and Sunday.
As part of its Call for Action initiative, the civic body has been tidying various parts of the city, and in the first phase, it has removed vehicles from EB Link Road and South Cooum Road.
Mechanic shops abandon unrepairable vehicles on the pavements and river banks by breaching boundary walls on this road.
Officials said these vehicles will be auctioned by central government’s MSTC limited . Officials said the removal drive would go on throughout the year.
City corporation commissioner Dr J Radhakrishnan said they are focussing on abandoned unusable vehicles initially on EB link road and also south Cooum road. “Soon, we will be removing vehicles in other parts of the city and zones too,” he said.
The civic body seized dismantled doors, hoods of cars dumped by mechanics near the river banks and packed them up in a lorry. These will be sent to scrapping yard.
