CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Police (GCP) Commissioner
Shankar Jiwal on Monday flagged off 110 new vehicles procured to improve law enforcement and to keep a close watch on city streets.
This includes 68 patrol vehicles (Innova and Bolero), 23 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) which will be part of VIP convoys, 15 vans (Tempo travellers) and four green-coloured jeeps (Gypsy), according to an official release.
These automobiles will join the existing fleet of 350 patrol vehicles in the city.
Given that the operation efficiency of police is directly linked to police mobility, GCP is optimistic that the additional vehicles will improve their response time during law and order situations and thereby protect lives and properties of people.
“All these new vehicles are fitted with red and blue coloured beacon lights so that motorists on the road and others can spot them from a distance,” said Jiwal.
Police said that drivers and police personnel in these cars and vans will be connected with the GCP control room, and they will be deployed to places based on the alerts or information passed on to them.
Besides,
GPS devices will be installed in all these vehicles for live monitoring. These vehicles will also be linked with the recently launched crime mapping project which aims at monitoring vulnerable areas.
For instance, if a particular area reports three or four chain snatching incidents over a period of two months, more patrol vehicles would be diverted on such streets.
