South Central Railway has cancelled 118 trains, including around 40 trains between Chennai and destinations in northern states and those that pass through the city and connect to southern towns, from December 3 to 7 because cyclone Michaung is likely to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu: On Cyclone 'Michaung', S Balachandran, Deputy-Director General of Meteorology, Chennai says, "There is depression over the South West Bay of Bengal...It is moving continuously North Westward, and the next 24 hours are likely to concentrate the cyclone further it will move North Westward direction and reach the West Central Bay of South Andhra and North Tamil Nadu Coast by the 4th. Then it will move parallel to the coast in Northward direction..."

Odisha is likely to receive very heavy rain on December 4 and 5, the IMD said, while issuing yellow (be updated) and orange (be prepared) warnings. The national weather agency has predicted that squally weather conditions, with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph, are likely in the coastal districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur on December 5.

Cyclone is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. Thereafter, it would move northwestwards and reach westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon.

Winds may begin gaining pace on December 3, and touch 50kmph-60kmph, gusting to 70kmph in the city and five neighbouring districts. While Chennai may receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning for the next 48 hours, the intensity may increase from December 3.

Chennai and its neighbouring districts may, however, get heavy rain when the cyclone nears the Tamil Nadu coast.

Cyclone Michaung that is brewing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to skip the city and make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam with winds that could reach speeds of 100kmph on Monday morning, IMD has forecast.

Schools to remain closed in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam on December 4 due to Cyclone Michaung

The territorial administration has declared holiday for all schools in Puducherry, Karaikal and Yanam regions on December 4 in view of cyclone Michaung. Director of School Education P Priyatarshiny said in a release on Friday that as cyclone Michaung is expected to hit the coastal regions on December 4 all schools would remain closed on that day. Official sources said this is as part of precautionary measures taken by the government. Puducherry and the outlying regions had experienced heavy rains since last few days although there was a lull in the monsoon today.

Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Friday issued a slew of directions to the collectors of 12 coastal districts in the wake of the meteorology department forecasting a cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of Bengal. It is expected that the storm would cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh with a wind speed of 80-90kmph gusting to 100kmph. In a video conference with the collectors, the chief minister said the administrators should take up precautionary measures to effectively handle the impact of the storm. The people of low-lying areas should be evacuated with a warning alert and accommodated in the government relief centres equipped with all amenities.

At 5.30 am on Friday, the system lay centred over the sea about 800 km away from Chennai, 970 km from Machilipatnam, 990 km from Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh and 790 km away from Puducherry. It is likely to continue to move towards the west and northwest, intensify into a deep depression by December 2 and further into a cyclonic storm around December 3, the IMD said.

Wednesday night proved to be a test for the city’s newly laid stormwater drains. The network of drainshelped keep many neighbourhoods free of waterlogging. Ekkattuthangal, Guindy,Arumbakkam, Anna Main Road in KK Nagar, Ramapuram, Manapakkam, Madipakkam, and Puzhuthivakkam are some of the areas that did not suffer flooding in spite of the heavy rain because of the new drains. A few neighbourhoods in north Chennai also benefited. When TOI visited parts of Ekkattuthangal, Guindy, and Arumbakkam on Thursday morning,the areas were largely free of stag-nation. This was not the situation last year.

Chennai Rains: Clogged canals led to some flooding

Though civic authoritie focussed on desilting stormwater drains and building new ones, the canals were largely ignored. That provedcostly, triggering floods in areas including Pulianthope, Kolathur, Jamalia, T Nagar, West Mambalam, parts of Kodambakam,and Teynampet, which are located close to canals. The water did not drain well into the afternoon on Thursday. The rainwater failed to flow into the canals which were already brimming. The canals, too, did not drain into the rivers because they were full as water was being released from reservoirs. This led to inundation in neighbourhoods located near the canals. The failure to desilt and deepen these water bodies affected their capacity to drain flood water.

Rain in Chennai: Water from Puzhal lake enters northern suburbs

The downpour on Wednesday might have spared Mudichur from water-logging in the southern suburbs. But parts of northern suburbs bore the brunt as excess water at the rate of 2,000 cusecs was released from Puzhal lake since Thursday morning. Residents in the south and western suburbs were affected as smaller waterbodies in the locality overflowed due to the incessant rain. According to the lake level report provided by Metrowater, Puzhal lake received 117 mm of rain on Wednesday.

Chennai Rains: Patients struggle as Korattur ESI hospital inundated

On Thursday morning, a family brought their eight-year-old daughter to the ESI hospital in Korattur to get an intravenous drip administered, but they had to return home as the hospital was flooded. Several patients had to suffer because the premises of the ESI hospital, established around 50 years ago, was flooded in the heavy rain. The inundation remained for most of the day on the campus and inside the building. This is not unusual for patients visiting the ESI hospital located in East Avenue, TNHB Colony. Every monsoon, hospital staff in Korattur have to wade through hip-level water, fearing the presence of snakes.

The monsoon’s second cyclone, which will be named Michaung, brewing over the Bay may reach north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast early on Monday. IMD is yet to forecast if the cyclone will cross Tamil Nadu coast or will veer off northwards. Nevertheless, the approaching system may bring heavy rainfall in the city and neighbouring districts on Saturday and heavy to very heavy rain on Sunday and Monday with wind speeds touching 60-70kmph gusting to 80kmph along the coast and adjoining areas of Bay of Bengal. IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts to the city, north coastal, adjoining interior and delta districts. As of Thursday, the weather system continued to be a well-marked low pressure over southeast Bay of Bengal and may intensify into a depression in 24 hours.
