Women feel unsafe as violent crime shoots up in Mohali

MOHALI: 2014 was the worst year for the Mohali police, as heinous crimes shot up and residents lost their trust on the cops. Violent crime has shown a surprising rise in 2014. There were 57 reported rapes in the year, as against 48 the previous year (2013), reveal police figures.
Crime against women in the city is increasing, and women feel unsafe to move around, due to sexual assault, as well as snatching incidents.SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar of Mohali said: "We have seen, over the past few years, a noticeable rise in victims coming forward to report offences, and some of them are falsely reported too."
While 17 murders were reported last year, the figure touched 32 by the end of this year. Kidnappings too have mounted. While 45 cases occurred last year, the figure has already touched 67 this year. Abduction cases were also on the rise, as more than 33 have already been reported, as against 27 last year. Besides, 15 gunpoint robbery cases too have been lodged in Mohali district.
The most common and life-threatening theft cases have shot up to 322. Last year, 313 such cases were registered. Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or other means have created a menace with 132 cases registered so far, as against last years's 89. Twenty abetment to suicide cases were registered in 11 months of this year, while 13 were reported last year.

February 20: Body of unidentified woman found near Zirakpur-Patiala road.
May 21: Body of Congress leader Rajwant Singh Shergill found in his car in Sector 69.
May 30: Body of three-year-old girl found in Ghaggar river.
June 5: Man stabbed to death near Bassi Jalalpur village, near Lalru.
June 7: Youth stabbed to death by neighbours at a park near Phase I.
June 23: Drunken brawl resulted in the death of a constable's brother.
August 2: An unidentified woman's dismembered, fastened body was found on the rail track on Saturday around 7am near Durali village in Kharar, Mohali.
August 27: Husband killed wife and committed suicide.
September 5: Man stabbed his step-brother to death over a property dispute in Badmajra village.
November 7: The half-mutilated body of five-year-old Mehram was found in a dumping ground in Sector 69. He was kidnapped on October 28, and killed the same day.
