CHANDIGARH: Sarwan Singh, accused of killing Shashi Sharma, 55, a resident of Sector 42 on January 17, had been stayed in the city for one day after the incident to mislead the police.
The accused was produced in the district court and sent to three-day police custody on Sunday.
Sharma, a widow was killed with a kitchen knife at her residence.
DSP (south) J S Khaira said the accused committed the crime with the intent of robbery and used the victim’s cell phone after the incident.

He said police are checking the accused’s background, but no other case is registered against him in the city so far.
Police claimed the accused had been employed at Sharma’s cement store for last three months, and was friendly with the widow’s servant, Mangloo.
Sources maintained that Sarwan tried his best to mislead the raiding party in Lucknow but failed to come up with any satisfactory answer about his exact whereabouts on the day the murder took place. Police officials said the accused had murdered the woman between 8pm and 10pm.
