Chandigarh, Jul 27 () With rains "eluding" their catchment areas, water level in
Bhakra
and
Pong
reservoirs was today recorded more than 50 feet lower than the figure last year even as water requirement of three partnering states Punjab, Haryana and
Rajasthan are being fully met.
Bhakra dam today recorded water level of 1,591.86 feet, which is 54 feet lesser than what it was on same day last year, an official of
Bhakra Beas Management Board
said today.
Water level in Bhakra stood at 1,645.13 feet in the corresponding period last year.
Similarly, water level in Pong dam, set up on
Beas
river, was 1,311.10 feet, lower by 48 feet as compared to water level of 1,359.11 feet on same day last year, he further said.
However, despite lower levels, the water requirement of three partnering states --Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are being fully met.
"We are fulfilling the water requirement of partnering states," the official added.
"Though catchment area of Pong dam today received some rain but there is no rain in catchment areas of Bhakra," the official said.
Notably, on July 15, the water level in both dams was lower by over 40 feet as compared to level of corresponding period.
The inflow of water into Bhakra was also lower this year.
Bhakra's water inflow was today recorded at 36,919 cusecs as against 68,843 cusecs observed last year.
However, in case of Pong, the water inflow was 1.35 lakh cusecs in comparison to 53,485 cusecs last year, official said.
Notably, last year, Punjab was asked to remain alert in the month of July last year in the wake of heavy inflow of water into the two reservoirs.
Bhakra and Pong dams are to be filled up to a level of 1,680 feet and 1,390 feet respectively by September. Partnering states -- Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan meet their water requirement for different purposes including irrigation from Bhakra and Pong dams. CHS ARK RG ARK
